November 20 was Latina Equal Pay Day. While you can be forgiven if you missed it, you cannot be forgiven if you are fine with the pay gap between Latinas and everyone else in the workforce.
Latinas typically only earn 54.4 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. That means it takes 23 months for a Latino to earn what a white man earns in a year.
There is new research out from LeanIn.Org, SurveyMonkey, and UnidosUs (nonprofit research, policy, and advocacy group serving the Hispanic community). They polled 5,690 people and found that:
There is an overriding reason for the pay gap between Latinas and others in the workforce – prejudice. 52% of people polled think that the pay gap exists because of prejudice against Latinas.
In reality, it is likely a combination of all three factors. Wage discrimination in California that is based on a person’s race, gender, ethnicity, or immigration status is illegal. For decades, the California Equal Pay Act has prohibited employers from paying employees of the opposite sex less for equal work. This law was strengthened in 2015 when Governor Brown signed the California Fair Pay Act.
There is no excuse for pay gaps between men and women, regardless of race or ethnicity, who perform the same work.
